Wausau, Wisconsin – Drivers across northern Wisconsin may face slick roads and reduced visibility next week as an active winter pattern raises the risk for snow and periods of freezing rain across the region from Monday through Friday.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, northern Wisconsin is favored for above-normal precipitation during the January 12–16 window, while temperatures are also trending above average. That combination increases the likelihood of mixed winter precipitation, including wet snow and light icing, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.
Communities from Rhinelander and Minocqua to Wausau and Eagle River could see multiple rounds of snow rather than a single storm, creating ongoing travel concerns on highways such as U.S. 51, Highway 29, and rural county roads. Warmer air aloft may also allow brief transitions to freezing rain, especially during system changeovers.
WisDOT officials typically urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check road conditions before traveling during prolonged winter events. Residents should ensure vehicles are winter-ready and keep phones charged in case of delays or minor power disruptions.
The unsettled pattern looks persistent through the workweek, and additional advisories may be issued as confidence increases. Travelers across northern Wisconsin should plan for changing conditions through Friday.
