Superior, Wis. – Northwest Wisconsin residents could face damaging winds, frequent lightning, and heavy rain overnight as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 4 a.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service warns that storms may intensify through the early morning hours, bringing the potential for downed trees, power outages, and hazardous driving conditions.
According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., the watch covers Burnett, Douglas, Polk, and Washburn counties. Thunderstorms are expected to track east-northeast, with isolated wind gusts exceeding 60 mph possible. Small hail and brief torrential downpours may also occur, reducing visibility along highways including U.S. 53, U.S. 2, and State Highway 35.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid travel during peak storm activity, and stay indoors away from windows. Emergency management officials advise charging phones and flashlights in case of power interruptions.
The storm threat is expected to diminish before sunrise, but additional showers and storms could return later this weekend.
