Green Bay, Wis. – Thick wildfire smoke drifting in from Canada is continuing to blanket much of Wisconsin, triggering air quality advisories and impacting visibility and health through the weekend. Sensitive groups are urged to avoid prolonged outdoor activity, as PM2.5 levels reach the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” threshold across the state.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the National Weather Service in Green Bay, an Air Quality Advisory remains in effect through at least noon Saturday, with additional smoke expected into Sunday. The heaviest concentrations are being observed in north-central and northeast Wisconsin, including areas like Wausau, Rhinelander, Appleton, and Green Bay.

Motorists are being cautioned about patchy fog and smoke reducing visibility early Saturday, especially near low-lying areas and lakes. In Green Bay, conditions are expected to improve slightly by Sunday night, though light smoke may linger. Calm winds are allowing pollutants to settle close to the surface, worsening conditions during overnight and early morning hours.

Residents with asthma or heart disease are encouraged to limit time outside, keep medication nearby, and monitor symptoms closely. Minor improvements in air quality may occur during daytime hours, but smoke concentrations are expected to fluctuate based on wind and fire activity in Canada.

Smoke-related alerts may be extended if current levels persist into early next week.
