Morgantown, WV – Residents across Northern West Virginia should brace for a cold snap, as patchy frost is likely tonight and again on Thursday night. With temperatures forecasted to dip into the mid-30s, the National Weather Service is advising locals to take action to protect outdoor plants and sensitive vegetation.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, temperatures in Morgantown and surrounding areas are expected to reach a low of around 38 degrees tonight under mostly clear skies. The clear, calm conditions are ideal for frost formation, which could damage plants if left unprotected. This frosty forecast is expected to continue, with Thursday night bringing another potential frost as temperatures are set to fall to about 37 degrees.

Today, Northern West Virginians will see mostly sunny skies with a high near 67 degrees, a mild reprieve ahead of tonight’s chill. Thursday will also bring sunshine and a similar high of 67 degrees, but as the evening approaches, clear skies will once again usher in cold temperatures, raising the likelihood of frost.

The weekend promises slightly warmer conditions, with Saturday’s high near 70 degrees under sunny skies. However, overnight lows will still hover around 40 degrees, meaning that rural and low-lying areas could see frost linger. By Sunday, an increase in cloud cover and a 50% chance of showers may help mitigate the frost risk, as temperatures rise slightly to a high of 69 degrees.

Residents are encouraged to check local forecasts frequently and take precautions over the next few days to protect vulnerable plants. While spotter activation is not anticipated at this time, the National Weather Service advises residents to remain vigilant as temperatures continue to drop. With frost expected tonight and tomorrow, Northern West Virginians should be prepared for chilly nights ahead.
