Pittsburgh, PA – A wintry mix of rain and snow is expected to create travel challenges across western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia on Saturday, with changing conditions throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), rain will move into the region Saturday morning, transitioning to snow by the evening as temperatures drop. Highs will reach near 40°F during the day, but colder air arriving after sunset will cause rain to change to snow, with up to 1–2 inches of accumulation possible overnight.
Drivers along major routes, including I-79, I-70, and I-376, should anticipate slick conditions during the transition period, particularly on elevated surfaces. Untreated roads may become icy as temperatures fall to the low 20s by early Sunday morning. Officials urge caution and recommend avoiding unnecessary travel during the evening hours.
Northern West Virginia will experience similar weather patterns, with rain dominating the daytime hours before snow arrives after sunset. Morgantown and surrounding areas could see brief periods of heavy snow, reducing visibility and complicating road conditions.
Looking ahead, Sunday will be cold with scattered snow showers and highs near 25°F. Overnight lows will plunge into the single digits, bringing dangerous wind chills and continued concerns for icy roadways. By Monday, temperatures will barely rise above the single digits, making this stretch of winter particularly challenging for outdoor activities.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions. Stay safe by checking road conditions before traveling and ensuring vehicles are equipped with winter emergency supplies.
