Warrenton, Va. – Strong thunderstorms are rolling through Northern Virginia this afternoon, bringing 60 mph winds and quarter-size hail to several counties, including Fauquier, Rappahannock, Culpeper, and Prince William.
According to the National Weather Service in Sterling, the storm was tracking east at 35 mph just before 4 p.m. Saturday. Communities in the path include Warrenton, New Baltimore, The Plains, and Amissville, where downed trees, blocked roads, and localized power outages are possible.
Emergency officials warn that falling branches and flying debris could cause injury or property damage. Drivers along U.S. Route 29 and secondary roads may encounter blocked lanes as trees come down. Residents are urged to move to interior rooms, avoid windows, and secure outdoor items such as patio furniture and grills.
Large hail has been reported, capable of damaging vehicles and rooftops. Lightning is also frequent, adding risk for those outdoors.
The thunderstorm warning remains in effect until 4:45 p.m. Saturday, though additional advisories may follow if storms continue to build eastward into the evening.
