Washington, DC – Strong thunderstorms capable of producing isolated tornadoes are developing across the region Wednesday evening, placing parts of Maryland and Northern Virginia under a tornado watch that stretches along the Interstate 70 and Interstate 81 corridors.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, the tornado watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday and includes communities from Cumberland and Hagerstown east toward Westminster and areas just northwest of Baltimore, along with Winchester and surrounding portions of the northern Shenandoah Valley. Storms are expected to organize quickly as they move east toward the Washington metropolitan area.
The greatest threat is currently focused along the I-81 corridor from Winchester through Hagerstown, where atmospheric conditions could support brief tornadoes, damaging wind gusts above 60 mph, and pockets of hail. Travelers along I-70 through western Maryland and I-81 across the Shenandoah Valley should expect sudden heavy rain and rapidly changing driving conditions.
While Washington, DC itself sits near the southern edge of the watch area, storms tracking east could approach the northern suburbs of the capital region during the evening hours. Emergency managers advise residents to stay alert for warnings and be ready to move indoors quickly if severe storms approach.
Residents should keep mobile alerts enabled, monitor local warnings, and identify a safe shelter area such as a basement or interior room away from windows in case a tornado warning is issued.
Storm chances will diminish later Wednesday night as the system moves toward the Mid-Atlantic coast, though additional severe weather alerts could still be issued before the watch expires.
