Charlottesville, Virginia – Snow could quickly coat mountain roads along the Blue Ridge by midmorning Sunday, with 5 inches or more possible at elevations above 2,500 feet before the system tapers late Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday morning through late Sunday night for the Northern and Central Virginia Blue Ridge. Forecasters say heavy snow is most likely at higher elevations, where colder air will support steady accumulation throughout the day.

Travel conditions may deteriorate rapidly along Skyline Drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and stretches of U.S. 33 and U.S. 250 that cross the ridgeline. Snowfall rates could increase Sunday afternoon, leading to snow-covered pavement and reduced visibility before sunset. Gusty winds may snap small branches and create isolated power disruptions in exposed mountain communities.

Lower elevations east of the Blue Ridge may see lighter totals, but drivers climbing into higher terrain could encounter sudden changes in road conditions. The greatest travel impacts are expected Sunday afternoon through late evening.

Residents and visitors should delay non-essential travel, secure loose outdoor items, and prepare for slick roads and possible power interruptions. Snow is expected to taper late Sunday night, though additional advisories could follow if accumulation trends higher.
