Burlington, VT – Dangerous heat is on the way for northern Vermont, with temperatures soaring into the 90s starting this weekend and peaking through Thursday. Residents from the Champlain Valley to central and southern Vermont should prepare for an extended stretch of above-normal temperatures, with heat risk reaching moderate to major levels.

According to the National Weather Service, highs will climb into the upper 80s Saturday, then surge to 91°F or higher Sunday through at least Thursday. The greatest risk for heat-related illness and power disruptions will be in the Burlington metro and Saint Lawrence Valley. Emergency officials recommend avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, drinking extra water, and checking on vulnerable neighbors.

Nighttime lows will only drop into the upper 60s and low 70s, offering little relief from the daytime heat. Those without air conditioning should seek out cooling centers or shaded public spaces, especially as the hot stretch continues. No significant storms are expected, but spotter activation is not anticipated at this time.

This unusually persistent August heat could last into late next week. Watch for additional advisories and prepare for continued impacts, especially for outdoor events and back-to-school planning.
