Burlington, VT – Residents across northern Vermont and parts of upstate New York are being warned to prepare for their first widespread frost of the season tonight, as temperatures dip to near the freezing mark.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Frost Advisory remains in effect from 10 p.m. Thursday through 9 a.m. Friday for Western Chittenden, Western Addison, Grand Isle, and Western Franklin Counties in Vermont, as well as Eastern Clinton and Eastern Essex Counties in New York.
Forecasters say overnight lows between 32 and 36 degrees will lead to frost formation in many rural and valley locations. Areas closest to Lake Champlain may remain slightly warmer due to northerly winds, reducing frost chances along the immediate lakeshore.
The advisory means sensitive vegetation could be damaged or killed if left unprotected. Gardeners and farmers are urged to cover tender plants or bring potted vegetation indoors before temperatures begin to fall after sunset.
The cold spell marks a seasonal turning point, as mid-October temperatures trend below normal heading into the weekend. Daytime highs are expected to rebound into the upper 50s Friday, with another chilly night possible before a gradual warm-up next week.
