Burlington, Vermont – A thick blanket of wildfire smoke continues to hang over much of Vermont this Wednesday, pushing air quality into the unhealthy range for parts of central and southern Vermont, and leaving skies hazy from Burlington to Rutland and south into Windsor County.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the highest smoke concentrations will persist through tonight, with an Air Quality Alert in effect until midnight Wednesday for central and southern sections. Anyone with respiratory issues should limit outdoor activities and keep windows closed. The smoke is expected to gradually lift by Thursday morning as shifting winds begin to clear the air, but another round of scattered thunderstorms is possible late Thursday afternoon.

Localized downpours and gusty winds may develop with Thursday’s storms, especially south of Interstate 89. The rest of the week looks drier and much hotter, with high temperatures climbing to the upper 80s by Saturday and into the 90s by Sunday. Residents should continue to monitor air quality alerts, avoid strenuous activity outdoors, and check for updated advisories—especially if conditions worsen.
