Salt Lake City, UT – Northern Utah residents should prepare for rain and snow beginning Friday night, as a winter storm sweeps through the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts widespread precipitation from Friday evening into Saturday morning, bringing colder temperatures and hazardous driving conditions to Salt Lake City and surrounding regions.
According to the NWS, the storm is expected to bring rain in the afternoon, transitioning to snow by Friday night as temperatures drop. Snow levels will start around 5,000–5,500 feet but are predicted to lower by evening, allowing snow to reach valley floors. Residents and drivers along Interstate 80 and other main routes should expect slick, slushy conditions that could impact travel, particularly in the higher elevations, including the Upper Cottonwoods area, where snowfall may be heavier.
Friday’s forecast shows temperatures peaking near 53°F in the afternoon, but dropping to a low of 33°F at night. Snow accumulations are expected to be light—around half an inch in lower areas—though mountain routes may see more, creating icy patches and reducing visibility for drivers.
Saturday morning could bring lingering snow showers, with highs only reaching 40°F. The cold snap will persist, with Sunday temperatures forecasted to be around 44°F. The chill will continue into next week, with highs near 41°F on Monday and a chance of snow before temperatures warm slightly by midweek.
As this winter weather system approaches, residents are advised to monitor road conditions and avoid unnecessary travel, especially late Friday and early Saturday. Officials recommend winterizing vehicles, keeping extra blankets and food in cars, and allowing extra time for travel over mountain passes.
