Salt Lake City, UT – Snow and isolated mountain thunderstorms are creating slick, winter driving conditions above 8,500 feet across the Wasatch and western Uinta mountains through late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. MST Wednesday for the Wasatch Mountains north and south of Interstate 80 and the western Uinta Mountains. An additional 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected at higher elevations, with localized bursts of 4 to 5 inches possible under embedded thunderstorms producing graupel.

Higher terrain near Alta, Brighton, Logan Summit, Mirror Lake Highway, Mantua and Moon Lake will see the greatest impacts. Quick-hitting showers may rapidly coat roads, especially along mountain passes and steep canyon routes. Graupel and heavier convective bursts could briefly reduce visibility and create slushy, snow-packed stretches.

Drivers crossing I-80 near Parleys Summit or traveling along Mirror Lake Highway should reduce speed and allow extra stopping distance. Check Utah Department of Transportation updates at udottraffic.utah.gov before heading into the mountains.

Snow showers diminish toward early evening, but slick spots may linger after sunset as temperatures cool. Additional advisories are possible if storms redevelop.
