Salt Lake City, Utah – Freezing fog is expected to create hazardous driving conditions in northern Utah overnight into Friday morning, Jan. 9, as a Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect for Cache Valley.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, the advisory is active from 11 p.m. Thursday night through 9 a.m. MST Friday, Jan. 9, for the Utah portion of Cache Valley, including Logan and Smithfield.

Visibility is expected to drop to one to two miles in areas of freezing fog. Forecasters warn that moisture from the fog may freeze on road surfaces, particularly on bridges and overpasses, leading to slick and hazardous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service advises that low visibility combined with icy road surfaces may make early-morning travel especially dangerous. Drivers commuting during the overnight and early morning hours of Friday, Jan. 9, are urged to use caution, slow down, and allow extra distance between vehicles.

Officials recommend using headlights, reducing speed, and remaining alert for sudden changes in visibility. Even roads that appear wet may be icy in freezing fog conditions.

Motorists are encouraged to monitor road conditions before traveling by checking udottraffic.utah.gov or calling 511 for the latest updates.
