Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Travel conditions across South Dakota could turn slick at times next week as a more active winter pattern increases the chances for snow from Monday through Friday.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, much of South Dakota is favored for above-normal precipitation during the January 12–16 period. Temperatures are also expected to run above average, supporting mainly snow with occasional wet, heavier bursts, particularly in eastern portions of the state.
Eastern South Dakota, including Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Watertown, appears most likely to see recurring snow chances, while central areas such as Pierre and Mitchell could also pick up measurable snowfall. Western South Dakota, including Rapid City, may see lighter or more sporadic snow, depending on storm track. Interstates 29 and 90 could experience periods of reduced visibility and snow-covered pavement during heavier bands.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation typically advises motorists to plan ahead, reduce speeds, and monitor road conditions closely during extended winter weather patterns. Residents should prepare for snow-covered sidewalks and allow extra time for commutes.
The active setup may continue into late week, and winter weather advisories could be issued as confidence increases. Drivers across South Dakota should stay alert for changing conditions through Friday.
