State College, Pa. – Overnight lows near freezing will bring widespread frost across northern and central Pennsylvania early Thursday, with a frost advisory in effect from 12 a.m. until 9 a.m. Sensitive outdoor plants and late-season crops face damage if left unprotected.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, counties under the advisory include Elk, McKean, Potter, Tioga, Sullivan, Cameron, Clearfield, northern Centre, northern Clinton, and northern Lycoming. Cities and towns at risk include Bradford, Wellsboro, DuBois, Clearfield, Emporium, Renovo, Mansfield, and Williamsport’s northern valleys. Forecasters expect temperatures as low as 32 degrees in sheltered valleys, with frost forming on exposed surfaces.
Farmers, gardeners, and homeowners are urged to cover tender vegetation or bring it indoors before midnight. Near-ground freezing temperatures could also create slick spots on bridges and shaded rural roads during the early commute.
The frost advisory expires at 9 a.m. Thursday as sunshine lifts temperatures into the 50s. However, more chilly nights are possible through the weekend, keeping the risk of frost across the Pennsylvania Wilds region.
