Sandusky, Ohio – Drivers across northern Ohio are facing a treacherous start to Thursday as lake effect snow continues to sweep inland, coating roads and bridges with snow and ice during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect across much of north central, northeast, and northwest Ohio. Snowfall of 1 to 3 inches is expected in areas including Sandusky, Seneca, Crawford, Richland, Ashland, and Wayne counties through mid-morning, while Erie and Huron counties could see up to 4 inches by early afternoon. Farther east, Mahoning, Stark, and Trumbull counties remain under an advisory through this evening as snow bands linger.
Lake effect snow is creating rapidly changing conditions along Interstate 90, U.S. Route 250, U.S. Route 30, and State Route 2, with slick pavement reported near Mansfield, Wooster, Norwalk, Fremont, Sandusky, Canton, Warren, and Youngstown. Bridges and overpasses are especially hazardous, and brief bursts of heavier snow can quickly reduce visibility.
Bitter cold is adding to the danger, with wind chills hovering near zero this morning. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra braking distance, and delay non-essential travel when possible. Snow showers will gradually ease later today, but slick spots may persist into the evening where advisories remain in effect.
