Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect across much of northern Ohio early Thursday as lake effect snow and gusty winds create slippery travel conditions on New Year’s Day.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, advisories continue until 7 a.m. EST for Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina, Wayne, Stark, Mahoning, Summit, Portage, and Trumbull counties. The advisory area includes major population centers such as Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, Elyria, Lorain, Wooster, and surrounding communities.
Forecasters expect additional lake effect snow accumulations of up to one inch before conditions improve later this morning. While snowfall totals are relatively light, winds gusting as high as 35 mph late overnight may lead to areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility, particularly in open areas and along east–west roadways.
The National Weather Service warned that roads, bridges, and overpasses may become slick, with hazardous conditions most likely during the early morning hours. The advisory coincides with the Thursday morning commute, increasing the risk of slowdowns and crashes.
Areas of blowing snow could briefly reduce visibility, especially in exposed locations near Lake Erie and across higher terrain. Even short bursts of snow combined with gusty winds may rapidly deteriorate driving conditions.
Transportation officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and delay unnecessary travel until conditions improve. The Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission recommend checking current roadway conditions at ohgo.com before departing.
While snow intensity is expected to diminish after sunrise, lingering slick spots may remain on untreated roads into the morning hours, particularly in shaded areas.
Drivers across northern Ohio are advised to remain alert for changing conditions until the advisory expires later this morning.
