Cleveland, OH – Residents across northern Ohio should prepare for the possibility of strong thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, with damaging winds as the main hazard.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, scattered severe storms are expected to develop Monday, September 22, with the highest risk between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Forecasters warn that storms could produce wind gusts reaching up to 60 miles per hour, especially in areas along and south of a line from Upper Sandusky to Medina to Canton.

While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, the NWS noted that a few stronger cells could cause localized damage and power outages. Much of the region remains under a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms, while areas farther north near Cleveland, Elyria, and Sandusky face a marginal (Level 1) risk.

The main threats include damaging straight-line winds, which can topple trees, bring down power lines, and make driving hazardous. Heavy rainfall is also expected at times, though most areas will see beneficial rain.

The weather service urges residents to stay alert and have multiple ways to receive warnings this evening. Safety tips include moving outdoor items inside, identifying a safe indoor shelter, and avoiding travel during peak storm hours if possible.

“People with outdoor plans today should stay weather-aware and monitor forecasts,” NWS Cleveland advised in its latest update.

Storm activity is expected to taper off later tonight as the system pushes eastward.
