Cleveland, Ohio – Swimmers and boaters along Lake Erie should take extra caution through Thursday as rip currents and strong waves create dangerous conditions along the northern Ohio shoreline.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from Wednesday evening through Thursday evening for Ottawa, Erie, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Lake and Ashtabula counties. Winds and wave action are expected to generate strong currents that can pull swimmers away from shore and push them into deeper water or against piers and breakwalls.
The most dangerous conditions are expected Wednesday night into Thursday when winds may gust up to 20 mph out of the northeast. The National Weather Service urges swimmers to remain out of the water until the advisory expires, as rip currents will be powerful enough to overpower even experienced swimmers.
In addition to the beach hazards, a marginal risk for severe storms remains in place Tuesday evening across northern Ohio. Damaging winds are the primary threat, with showers and isolated thunderstorms possible into late night hours.
Residents planning late-summer lakefront visits should exercise caution and avoid entering the water until conditions improve. Advisories are expected to remain in effect through Thursday evening, with updates possible if winds strengthen.
