Burlington, Vermont — A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect Thursday across portions of northern New York, where accumulating snow and bitter cold are expected to make travel difficult through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the warning continues until 7 p.m. EST for Northern Franklin, Northern St. Lawrence, and Southwestern St. Lawrence counties, including the communities of Massena, Ogdensburg, Malone, Potsdam, Gouverneur, Fort Covington, and Norfolk.
Forecasters said additional snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected today, bringing storm totals to between 5 and 8 inches. Snow-covered roads, along with slick bridges and overpasses, are likely to create hazardous driving conditions throughout the day.
The National Weather Service warned that travel will be very difficult, impacting both the Thursday morning and evening commutes. Snow is expected to gradually taper to scattered snow showers later this evening.
In addition to snowfall, wind chills near 10 degrees below zero are forecast by this afternoon, increasing the risk of frostbite and compounding travel hazards for anyone stranded outdoors.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel if possible. Those who must travel are advised to carry emergency supplies.
Road conditions can be checked at 511ny.org for New York and newengland511.org for Vermont travelers.
