Burlington, Vt. – Much of northern New York and central to northern Vermont will see the first widespread frost of the season early Saturday morning, with temperatures dipping into the low 30s. A Frost Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m., covering communities from Massena, Malone, and Lake Placid in New York to Stowe, Montpelier, and St. Johnsbury in Vermont.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the coldest temperatures will occur near sunrise, when valleys and sheltered areas will see the most widespread frost. Sensitive plants and late-season crops are at risk if left uncovered.
Gardeners and homeowners are urged to cover flowers and vegetables or bring potted plants indoors before nightfall Friday. Outdoor plumbing in colder spots should also be checked and protected to avoid early-season damage.
Frost development will be especially noticeable in rural areas across the St. Lawrence Valley, the Green Mountains, and Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Early risers can expect to see frost on lawns, rooftops, and vehicles before temperatures rebound with sunshine by mid-morning.
The Frost Advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Saturday, with additional frost possible again Saturday night.
