Burlington, VT – Scattered thunderstorms could bring heavy downpours and a risk of localized flooding to northern New York and northwest Vermont from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, most areas will see less than an inch of rainfall, but thunderstorms may deliver two to three inches in some locations. The greatest threat for storms and high rainfall totals will focus on northern New York and northwest Vermont Sunday, shifting east across the Champlain Valley and into northern Vermont on Monday.

Drivers in Burlington, Plattsburgh, St. Albans, and the Champlain Valley should watch for rapidly changing road conditions, minor street flooding, and ponding in low-lying areas. Power outages and travel delays are possible where the heaviest rain falls. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid driving through flooded roads, secure outdoor items, and monitor local alerts.

Localized rainfall rates may cause brief, sharp rises on small streams, especially in flood-prone zones. This summer’s wet spell follows a pattern similar to July 2023’s flash flooding in the region, so extra caution is advised.

Thunderstorm chances and heavy rain will continue through late Monday, with more advisories possible if conditions worsen.
