Potsdam, NY – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Southwestern St. Lawrence County from 1 a.m. Thursday to 7 p.m. Friday, and for Southern Franklin County from 10 a.m. Thursday to 7 p.m. Friday, as lake effect snow and gusty winds are expected to create difficult travel conditions across northern New York.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, snow totals will range from 1 to 8 inches depending on the location of the snow bands, with southern Franklin County likely to see 3 to 7 inches. Winds are forecast to gust between 30 and 40 mph, reducing visibility and causing areas of blowing and drifting snow.
Forecasters warn that travel could be very difficult, especially for holiday commuters on Thursday and Friday. The heaviest snow is expected in narrow bands that may shift during the day, leading to rapidly changing road and visibility conditions.
Drivers are urged to slow down, use extra caution, and plan for slippery roads—particularly along higher elevations near Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, and Gouverneur. The National Weather Service recommends checking 511ny.org or newengland511.org for real-time travel updates.
Conditions are expected to improve Friday night as snow showers weaken and winds subside heading into the weekend.
