Northern New York – Wind Advisory Friday, Jan 9 Into Early Saturday

Burlington, Vermont – Strong southwest winds are expected to impact northern New York on Friday, Jan. 9, prompting multiple Wind Advisories across the St. Lawrence Valley and areas north of the Adirondacks into early Saturday, Jan. 10.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Wind Advisory is in effect for northern and southwestern St. Lawrence County from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. EST Friday, Jan. 9, including Massena, Ogdensburg, Potsdam, Gouverneur, and Norfolk. Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected, with the strongest gusts occurring during the evening hours as a cold front moves through the region.

Additional Wind Advisories remain in effect from 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9 through 1 a.m. EST Saturday, Jan. 10, for Franklin County, western Clinton County, and southeastern St. Lawrence County, including Malone, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Ellenburg, Fort Covington, Dannemora, South Colton, and Star Lake. In these areas, southwest winds of 15 to 30 mph may gust as high as 55 mph, particularly along the Route 11 corridor north of the Adirondacks.

The National Weather Service warns that gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects, down tree limbs, and cause isolated power outages. Travel may be difficult at times, especially for high-profile vehicles on exposed roadways.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and use extra caution while driving during the advisory period, especially during the Friday afternoon and evening hours, Jan. 9, when wind gusts are expected to peak.
