Star Lake, NY – A powerful lake-effect snow band will continue hammering southeastern St. Lawrence County this Thanksgiving morning, delivering bursts of heavy snow, 40 mph wind gusts, and visibility so low that travel may become life-threatening at times. Deepening accumulations near Star Lake will challenge holiday travelers across the western Adirondack foothills.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect through 7 p.m. Friday for southeastern St. Lawrence County, including South Colton and Star Lake. Forecasters expect 5 to 11 inches of additional snow, with localized totals near or above a foot where the most persistent bands stall. According to meteorologists, winds of 30 to 40 mph will push snow across Route 3 and rural corridors near Cranberry Lake, creating whiteouts within seconds. According to New York 511, bursts of blowing snow may temporarily close visibility on forested road stretches and high terrain east of Fine.
The combination of strong winds, deep snow, and heavy weight on snow-laden branches may also lead to sporadic power outages. Highway crews warn that snow will rebuild quickly on treated surfaces, especially as bands intensify Weather Today – Thanksgiving Day 2025.
Officials urge residents to delay non-essential travel. If driving is unavoidable, carry a winter storm kit that includes blankets, food, water, flashlights, and jumper cables. Drive slowly, avoid sudden braking, and monitor updated conditions before departing.
Conditions remain hazardous through Friday afternoon before gradual improvement begins Friday night.
