Long Lake, New York – Winter weather hazards are stacking up across Hamilton County as lake effect snow continues overnight, followed by the potential for heavier snowfall beginning Wednesday afternoon. Drivers and residents across the Adirondacks should prepare for worsening travel conditions through midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until early Wednesday morning as lake effect snow adds another 1 to 2 inches of accumulation. Gusty winds up to 35 mph may cause areas of blowing snow, leading to slick roads and sudden drops in visibility overnight.
Attention then turns to a Winter Storm Watch that begins Wednesday afternoon and continues through Thursday afternoon. During that period, heavier snow is possible, with total accumulations between 5 and 9 inches, especially along the south-facing slopes of the southwest Adirondacks. Snowfall rates could reach up to 1 inch per hour at times Wednesday afternoon and evening, making road conditions deteriorate quickly.
Communities including Long Lake, Wells, Sabattis, Hoffmeister, and surrounding rural roadways are likely to see the greatest impacts. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads may become hazardous, increasing the risk of spin-outs and travel delays.
Residents are urged to slow down on snow-covered roads, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavier snowfall, and stay alert for rapidly changing conditions. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as confidence increases, with hazardous travel possible through Thursday afternoon.
