Canton, NY – A fast-moving severe thunderstorm is sweeping across northern New York Thursday afternoon, packing wind gusts up to 60 mph and raising the risk of downed trees and power lines across St. Lawrence County. Penny-sized hail is also possible, threatening vehicles and property through at least 3:45 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the warning affects more than a dozen towns including Canton, Gouverneur, Madrid, and Lisbon. The storm’s strong winds could impact travel on Routes 11 and 812, and emergency officials are urging drivers to use caution as visibility may drop quickly during downpours.

Power outages are possible, especially in rural stretches between De Kalb Junction and Richville. Local schools in the area may face delays or early dismissals if conditions worsen. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, charge electronics, and stay indoors until the storm passes.

This warning includes nearly 48,000 residents and impacts 18 schools and one hospital in the path of the storm.

Additional advisories may follow as storms continue tracking southeast. Stay weather-aware and monitor alerts through Thursday evening.
