Malone, NY – Northern New York communities should prepare for hazardous travel conditions Saturday evening as freezing rain spreads into the region from 4 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday. The system will impact Northern Franklin, Northern St. Lawrence, Southern Franklin, Western Clinton, and Western Essex counties, including Saranac Lake, Massena, Tupper Lake, and Lake Placid.
According to the National Weather Service, ice totals may reach up to two-tenths of an inch, enough to create slick roads, icy bridges, and difficult travel conditions through late Saturday night. Even modest icing can quickly cause vehicles to lose traction, especially on untreated or elevated surfaces.
Forecasters warn that the greatest impacts are likely after dark, as temperatures dip and steady freezing rain continues into early Sunday morning. According to the advisory, isolated power outages are also possible where ice collects on trees and power lines.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and monitor updated road conditions through the New York 511 system. Pedestrians should use caution as sidewalks, stairs, and driveways may become icy and difficult to see until conditions worsen.
Residents planning evening travel should check conditions frequently and prepare for rapidly changing road surfaces across the northern Adirondacks and St. Lawrence Valley.
