Watertown, NY – The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Jefferson and Lewis counties from late Wednesday night through Friday evening, warning of heavy lake effect snow, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions heading into the Thanksgiving holiday.
Forecasters say snow accumulations may exceed 7 inches in areas under the most persistent lake bands. Winds up to 40 mph could cause blowing and drifting snow, leading to whiteout conditions and hazardous travel across northern New York, including the Watertown and Lowville areas.
Snow is expected to intensify late Wednesday night, continuing through Thanksgiving Day and gradually tapering off by Friday evening. The NWS cautions that rapid changes in visibility and slick, snow-covered roads may make travel treacherous during the busiest travel period of the year.
Motorists are advised to delay nonessential travel, monitor forecast updates, and keep emergency supplies in vehicles in case of delays or closures.
