Burlington, Vt. – Snow-covered highways and slick overpasses are slowing traffic across northern New York and Vermont as steady snowfall continues through the Saturday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. EST Saturday for portions of St. Lawrence and Franklin counties in New York and much of northern and central Vermont, including Burlington, Rutland, St. Albans and Stowe. Storm totals are expected to reach 4 to 7 inches before snow tapers later this morning.
Interstate 89 through Chittenden County and Interstate 87 near the Canadian border are seeing accumulating snow, with bridges and elevated roadways turning slick first. Secondary roads in Lamoille, Caledonia and Orleans counties are snow-covered, and reduced visibility may develop in steadier bursts. Communities such as Malone, Potsdam and Gouverneur are also reporting accumulating snow on untreated surfaces.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra braking distance and check conditions at newengland511.org or 511ny.org before traveling. Plow crews remain active, but snowfall rates may briefly outpace treatment efforts.
Snow is expected to diminish by mid- to late morning, though icy patches could linger beyond 10 a.m. Additional advisories may be issued if lingering bands redevelop.
