BURLINGTON, Vt. – A sharp chill greeted northern Vermont and upstate New York early Friday, with a Frost Advisory in effect until 9 a.m. Temperatures dropped into the low 30s across the Champlain Valley, marking the coldest morning of the season before a dramatic warm-up this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, areas including Burlington, Middlebury, St. Albans, and Plattsburgh saw widespread frost under calm skies. Gardeners and homeowners should protect tender vegetation and cover outdoor plants to prevent frost damage. Winds near Lake Champlain may reduce frost formation close to the shoreline, but inland valleys will remain vulnerable to cold air pooling early.

By this afternoon, sunshine will return with highs near 55°F, offering a crisp fall day for leaf-viewing or last-minute garden cleanup. Saturday will bring a noticeable warm-up, with highs near 61°F under partly sunny skies.

Conditions take a turn by late Sunday as clouds thicken and a strong southerly breeze pushes temperatures into the 70s before rain arrives. Showers become widespread Sunday night, with gusts up to 30 mph possible ahead of a passing cold front.

Residents planning weekend travel along I-89 or U.S. Route 7 should prepare for changing conditions, including slick roads and reduced visibility late Sunday. Cooler, drier weather returns Monday, wrapping up a classic New England fall weekend of contrast—frost, warmth, and a splash of rain.
