Burlington, Vermont – Sweltering heat will grip the Champlain and St. Lawrence Valleys today, with heat index values soaring into the mid and upper 90s from noon until 8 p.m. Wednesday. Residents in Burlington, St. Albans, Plattsburgh, and Middlebury are urged to take immediate precautions as excessive heat and humidity raise the risk for heat-related illnesses.
According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory is in effect for northwestern Vermont and northeastern New York, including cities such as White River Junction, Springfield, Ogdensburg, and Malone. The highest risk will persist through the afternoon and early evening, especially for those working or spending extended time outdoors.
Schools, local employers, and outdoor recreation sites across Grand Isle, Western Chittenden, Eastern Windsor, and neighboring counties are adjusting schedules and opening cooling centers. Health officials recommend wearing light clothing, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding strenuous activities during peak heat hours. For outdoor workers, OSHA advises frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning and immediate action if heat exhaustion or heat stroke symptoms appear.
This level of heat is rare for mid-July and can strain power grids and public services. The region last saw similar conditions during the 2021 heatwave, when area hospitals reported a spike in heat-related ER visits.
Heat advisories remain in effect until 8 p.m. tonight. Residents should monitor local alerts for potential updates or extended warnings as conditions evolve.
