Burlington, Vermont – Strong south to southwesterly winds and periods of showers are expected to continue across northern New York and parts of the Champlain Valley through tonight, with the strongest gusts arriving during the evening hours.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Burlington, a Wind Advisory remains in effect for most of northern New York until 1 a.m. Saturday. Portions of northern and southwestern St. Lawrence County are under a Wind Advisory until 10 p.m. Friday.

Forecasters say widespread wind gusts between 25 and 45 mph are expected across the region, with gusts up to 55 mph possible in northern New York. Locally higher gusts may occur along the U.S. Route 11 corridor near Malone and Chateaugay.

The National Weather Service warned that strong winds could lead to isolated power outages, especially where saturated ground conditions make trees more vulnerable to uprooting. Loose outdoor objects may be blown around, and residents are urged to secure items such as trash cans, patio furniture, and decorations.

Strong winds may also make driving difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles on exposed roadways and north–south routes. Periods of showers combined with gusty winds could further reduce visibility at times this evening.

The strongest wind gusts are expected between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m., before gradually diminishing overnight as the weather system moves east.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert for updates and monitor local conditions through the night. Utility crews and emergency managers are prepared to respond if outages occur.

For evening commuters, overnight workers, and travelers across northern New York, the peak wind window may impact travel and outdoor activities late tonight.
