Star Lake, NY – A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for southeastern St. Lawrence County from 1 a.m. Thursday through 7 p.m. Friday, as heavy snow and strong winds are expected to create life-threatening whiteout conditions across northern New York.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, snow totals are forecast to reach 4 to 10 inches, with locally higher amounts possible within persistent snow bands. Winds may gust between 30 and 40 mph, causing blowing and drifting snow and sharply reduced visibility—at times below one-quarter mile.
Forecasters warn that travel will be very difficult to impossible, particularly during Thanksgiving morning and Friday’s commutes. The weight of the snow, combined with gusty winds, may also lead to downed tree limbs and sporadic power outages.
Officials advise residents to delay nonessential travel and to prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions common to lake effect snow events. Motorists who must travel are urged to carry a winter emergency kit, including blankets, flashlights, water, and food.
Conditions are expected to slowly improve by Friday night, as snow bands weaken and winds diminish heading into the weekend.
