Burlington, VT – Parts of northern New York are under a Winter Weather Advisory late today as a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and light snow threatens to create hazardous travel conditions across the North Country.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday, covering Northern St. Lawrence, Northern Franklin, Southern Franklin, Western Clinton, and Western Essex counties. Forecasters expect up to 0.2 inches of ice and up to one inch of snow in the affected areas.
Communities including Saranac Lake, Malone, Massena, Tupper Lake, Dannemora, Newcomb, Lake Placid, Fort Covington, Norfolk, and Ellenburg are likely to experience slippery conditions as temperatures drop around sunset. Even small amounts of ice can quickly glaze roads, driveways, stairs, and sidewalks, increasing the risk of crashes and falls.
According to the NWS, mixed precipitation will develop late this afternoon and continue through the evening. Ice is expected to be the dominant hazard, particularly in higher terrain and shaded roadways where freezing temperatures will arrive earliest. Drivers in the Adirondack region should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and remain alert for untreated surfaces that may appear wet but are coated in ice.
Road condition updates are available on 511ny.org for New York and newengland511.org for nearby Vermont commuters who may be traveling across state lines.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after midnight as precipitation ends and temperatures level off into early Sunday morning.
