Albany, New York – An Extreme Cold Watch is in effect across 11 northern New York counties, prompting safety warnings as dangerously low wind chills move into the region.

According to the New York State Police, the watch covers Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence and Warren counties through 1 p.m. Friday. Officials warn that “feels like” temperatures could range from 20 to 40 degrees below zero, with the coldest conditions expected overnight and during the early morning hours.

State Police say the extreme cold poses serious health and safety risks, including frostbite and hypothermia, and are urging residents to avoid travel if possible. Those who must go outside are advised to dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and let someone know their destination and expected return time.

Officials also urged residents to watch for signs of hypothermia, including confusion, uncontrollable shivering, slurred speech, extreme fatigue, and stiff muscles. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately. If medical help is not immediately available, individuals should be warmed slowly using dry clothing, blankets, and warm non-alcoholic liquids.

Drivers who become stranded are warned about the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. State Police advise running vehicles for about 10 minutes each hour, slightly opening a window for fresh air, and ensuring the exhaust pipe remains clear of snow or debris.

The advisory also includes reminders to use generators safely and to check on neighbors who may be elderly, disabled, or otherwise vulnerable to extreme cold.

Troopers say they are monitoring conditions statewide and remain ready to assist as temperatures remain dangerously low.
