Burlington, VT – Sweltering heat and dangerous air quality are gripping Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, bringing health concerns and disruption for millions through Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service, Air Quality Alerts remain in effect across much of northern New York and Vermont—excluding Rutland and Windsor Counties—until midnight Tuesday. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues, should stay indoors and limit strenuous activity.

Heat Advisories are posted from Concord to Manchester, New Hampshire, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with heat index values in the lower 90s possible by late afternoon. The oppressive heat will intensify Wednesday and Thursday, pushing heat index values into the mid-to-upper 90s across central and southern Maine—including Portland, Lewiston, and Augusta—as well as much of New Hampshire and Vermont.

Schools, outdoor workers, and vulnerable residents should take extra precautions: drink plenty of water, avoid peak sun hours, check on neighbors, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Air quality remains poor, especially for sensitive groups, so limit outdoor time if possible.

These conditions mirror last July’s regional heatwave and pose elevated risks of heat-related illness and poor air quality through Thursday night. Further advisories or extensions remain possible as the situation develops.
