Burlington, Vt. – Rain-soaked roads and cooler temperatures will mark the start of Memorial Day weekend across Vermont and northern New York, but sunshine and warmer weather are expected by Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, widespread showers will dominate Friday and Saturday, with precipitation chances as high as 90% in Springfield and Tupper Lake. Temperatures will hover in the upper 40s to low 50s Friday, before gradually rising through the weekend. By Memorial Day, most areas will reach the upper 60s to low 70s, with rain chances dropping to just 20–30%.

Communities including Montpelier, Plattsburgh, and Middlebury can expect drier skies beginning Sunday, with temperatures rebounding into the mid-60s. In Lake Placid and Island Pond, highs will remain slightly cooler, topping out near 63°F. Interstate travelers and event-goers should plan around wet conditions through Saturday, especially in areas like Saint Albans and Richford, where early rainfall totals could impact outdoor plans.

Residents are advised to avoid flooded roadways, keep rain gear handy through Saturday, and monitor local alerts for updates. Campers and drivers should prepare for muddy terrain and limited visibility on back roads.

The National Weather Service notes that improving conditions are expected into Memorial Day, with no further advisories currently issued.
