Albuquerque, N.M. – Flooding remains a concern across parts of northern and central New Mexico today as heavy rain threatens burn scars and low-lying areas. A new Flood Watch is in effect from noon through late this evening for the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Northeast Highlands, and the South Central Mountains near Ruidoso.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, scattered to numerous thunderstorms will develop this afternoon, producing bursts of heavy rainfall. The Hermit’s Peak Calf Canyon burn scar, already saturated after three days of steady rain, is especially vulnerable to flash flooding. In the south, runoff from downpours may quickly overwhelm drainages around Ruidoso’s burn scars, raising the risk of debris flows and washed-out roads.
Drivers should avoid low-water crossings and be prepared for sudden closures on mountain highways. Residents near creeks or ditches are urged to move to higher ground if waters rise quickly. Storm drains may clog with debris, worsening flood impacts.
Though an earlier Flood Watch was canceled this morning for some northern zones, conditions are expected to deteriorate again this afternoon. Additional advisories or warnings could be issued as storms intensify.
