Taos, New Mexico — A hard freeze is expected across the Upper Rio Grande Valley late tonight into Sunday morning as temperatures dip to the mid-20s, marking one of the season’s first major cold snaps for northern New Mexico.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Freeze Watch remains in effect from late Saturday night through early Sunday. Lows could reach near 26 degrees across Taos, Española, and surrounding valleys, where clear skies and calm winds will allow temperatures to plummet before sunrise.
The agency warns that frost and freeze conditions could kill sensitive crops and outdoor vegetation. Homeowners are urged to disconnect and drain outdoor hoses, cover exposed pipes, and bring potted plants indoors. Farmers in the valley should take immediate steps to protect remaining harvests, especially tender produce and orchard crops.
This freeze event signals a seasonal shift for northern New Mexico, with colder air expected to settle in through early next week. Additional frost advisories could follow as nighttime lows remain near freezing into midweek.
