Chama, New Mexico – Heavy snow and 45 mph wind gusts will begin slamming the Tusas Mountains by 11 p.m. tonight, threatening near-whiteout conditions before the Friday morning drive.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 11 p.m. tonight until 5 p.m. Friday for the Tusas Mountains, including Chama. Snow totals will range from 3 to 6 inches below 8,500 feet, with up to 11 inches across higher peaks and west-facing slopes. Wind gusts could reach 45 mph, producing blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.
Mountain routes near U.S. Highway 64 and higher forest roads will likely become snow-packed overnight. Strong winds may drift snow across exposed ridgelines and could bring down tree branches, increasing the risk of isolated power outages.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation urges drivers to check road conditions by dialing 511 or visiting nmroads.com before traveling. Anyone heading into higher terrain Friday should carry extra food, water and a flashlight in case of delays.
Snow is expected to taper by late Friday afternoon, but slick conditions may linger into Friday night. Additional advisories could follow if lingering bands redevelop.
