Berlin, N.H. – Residents in Coos County should prepare for the first hard freeze of the season as temperatures fall into the upper 20s overnight. The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesday for both northern and southern Coos.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, sub-freezing cold will settle across the county overnight, threatening crops, gardens, and unprotected pipes. Sensitive vegetation is expected to die off, and homeowners are urged to take precautions before nightfall.
Cities including Berlin, Lancaster, Colebrook, and Errol are all under the warning. Outdoor plumbing, hoses, and irrigation systems should be drained or covered, and potted plants should be moved indoors. Farmers across the Connecticut River Valley could see late-harvest crops like squash and pumpkins damaged if left unprotected.
Drivers may also encounter frosty conditions early Wednesday, particularly on shaded back roads. Commuters are encouraged to allow extra travel time and clear windshields thoroughly before heading out.
The Freeze Warning will expire by 8 a.m. Wednesday, though temperatures are expected to remain chilly through midweek, with additional cold nights possible.
