Killington, Vermont – Slippery and icy travel conditions are expected across parts of Vermont and northern New York beginning late this afternoon as a wintry mix spreads through the region and lingers into Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from late this afternoon through Sunday morning for eastern Rutland and western Windsor counties in Vermont, along with western Essex County in New York. Snow and sleet accumulations of up to 3 inches are possible, along with ice buildup approaching one tenth of an inch, enough to create hazardous road conditions.

Communities including Killington, Ludlow, Bethel, East Wallingford, Lake Placid, and Newcomb are expected to see periods of snow, sleet, and freezing rain through the evening and overnight hours. The wintry mix is expected to gradually transition to mostly snow by daybreak Sunday. Bridges, overpasses, and higher elevations are likely to become especially slick as temperatures hover near freezing.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use caution on untreated roads. Pedestrians should be alert for icy sidewalks and stairways, where falls are more likely. Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly after sunset as surface temperatures drop.

Conditions should improve later Sunday morning as precipitation tapers, though lingering slick spots may remain in shaded or elevated areas. Officials recommend monitoring 511 travel resources for updates as conditions evolve overnight.
