Caribou, Maine – Farmers and gardeners across northern Maine and Coos County, New Hampshire, will wake up to their first hard freeze of the season as subfreezing temperatures settle in overnight into early Saturday. The coldest spots could dip to 27 degrees, putting crops and sensitive plants at risk.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Caribou and Gray, freeze warnings remain in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday for Northwest Aroostook, Northern Somerset, Northern Piscataquis, Franklin, and Oxford counties in Maine, as well as Coos County in New Hampshire. Forecasters say Saturday night could be just as cold, or colder, than Friday night’s plunge.
The freeze will be widespread, affecting towns including Fort Kent, Allagash, Baxter State Park, Rangeley, Jackman, Berlin, and Colebrook. Outdoor plumbing and garden irrigation systems may also be vulnerable if not protected.
Residents are urged to cover plants, bring potted flowers inside, and drain exposed hoses before temperatures fall. Those with late-harvest crops should prepare for potential losses.
Freeze warnings remain active through sunrise Saturday, with another round of cold expected Saturday night. Additional advisories may follow if conditions persist.
