Portland, Maine – Snow will begin spreading across much of Maine overnight, potentially creating slick roads before a stronger storm brings heavy rain and gusty winds early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, low pressure moving through northern New England will produce accumulating snow from late tonight through Saturday morning. The heaviest snowfall is expected between about 1 a.m. and 10 a.m. Saturday, particularly across interior and northern parts of the state.

Several communities across central and western Maine, including areas near Rumford, Augusta, and the western mountains, could see around 4 to 6 inches of snow before precipitation tapers. Lighter totals closer to 1 to 3 inches are more likely along parts of southern Maine including Portland and coastal communities.

Road conditions may become slippery during the Saturday morning travel period as snow falls steadily for several hours. Gusty winds and scattered snow showers may linger into Saturday afternoon, especially in higher elevations.

Another stronger system is expected to arrive early next week. Forecasters say a developing low pressure system could bring moderate to locally heavy rainfall Monday into Monday night along with gusty southeasterly winds across much of Maine.

Rivers will also need to be monitored closely due to ongoing ice movement and the potential for ice jams as additional rainfall enters the region.

Residents should prepare for slick travel early Saturday and continue monitoring updates as the next storm approaches Monday with additional impacts possible across Maine.
