North Conway, New Hampshire – A light glaze of freezing rain is creating slick roads across parts of western Maine and northern New Hampshire early Monday, raising concerns for hazardous travel during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon Monday for northern Oxford and Franklin counties in Maine, along with northern Coos, Grafton, and Carroll counties in New Hampshire. Forecasters say freezing rain may coat surfaces with a thin layer of ice, especially on untreated roads, sidewalks, and elevated surfaces.

Communities including Rangeley, Farmington, Bethel, Rumford, Berlin, Lancaster, and North Conway could experience slippery conditions through late morning as temperatures hover near freezing.

Travel may be especially tricky on mountain and rural routes such as U.S. Route 2, Route 16 through the Mount Washington Valley, and Route 26 in western Maine, where shaded roadways are slower to warm.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and watch for black ice on bridges and overpasses. Pedestrians should also use caution on stairs and sidewalks, where thin ice may not be visible.

Conditions should gradually improve toward midday Monday as temperatures rise slightly and precipitation tapers off, though some icy spots could linger on less-traveled roads.
