Berlin, NH – A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will create hazardous travel conditions across northern New Hampshire and western Maine through the Thursday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, ME, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 12 p.m. Thursday, covering areas including Oxford, Franklin, and Somerset Counties in Maine, as well as Coös and Carroll Counties in New Hampshire. The advisory began at 11 p.m. Wednesday, with precipitation moving in overnight.
Forecasters expect 2 to 4 inches of snow, up to 1 inch of sleet, and ice accumulations up to two-tenths of an inch. The wintry mix will likely transition to rain by midday Thursday, but not before causing dangerous conditions on roads and highways.
Morning commuters are urged to delay travel if possible or use extreme caution. Temperatures will remain below freezing during peak travel hours, increasing the likelihood of icy roads, especially on untreated surfaces and secondary routes.
Drivers should monitor NewEngland511.org for the latest road conditions. Power outages may also occur in areas experiencing significant icing.
This late-season wintry event adds to a colder-than-average start to April for the region, where such mixed precipitation events are not uncommon.
