Manchester, NH – Heat index values soaring into the upper 90s are expected to blanket much of New Hampshire and southern Maine today, prompting urgent advisories and health warnings across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, ME, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday for Central Interior Cumberland and Interior York counties in Maine, and Cheshire, Merrimack, Hillsborough, Rockingham, and Strafford counties in New Hampshire. Cities including Manchester, Concord, Keene, Nashua, and Portland are bracing for potentially dangerous conditions, especially for vulnerable groups.
Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, avoid strenuous exercise, and stay hydrated. Schools and city facilities in Manchester, Nashua, and Portland may adjust hours or open cooling centers. Road crews and first responders are on alert for heat-related emergencies and possible delays, particularly along Routes 101, I-93, and I-95.
Power usage is expected to surge, raising concerns about potential outages as air conditioners run non-stop. Residents should check on elderly neighbors, ensure pets have water, and never leave children or animals in parked cars. Today’s heat comes amid a stretch of abnormally warm July weather for northern New England, reminiscent of the July 2021 heatwave.
The Heat Advisory remains active through 8 p.m., but additional warnings could be issued if triple-digit heat returns Thursday.
