Gray, Maine – Hazardous travel conditions are expected across much of Maine late tonight through Monday as a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain moves through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, mixed precipitation will overspread the area overnight, with freezing rain likely in many interior locations. Ice accumulations are forecast to range between one-quarter and four-tenths of an inch, which could create dangerous conditions on untreated roads, sidewalks, trees, and power lines.

Forecasters said precipitation is expected to begin between 10 p.m. Sunday and 5 a.m. Monday, depending on location. Snow and sleet may accumulate across interior areas, generally 2 inches or less, while southern and coastal areas may transition to plain rain. Elsewhere, freezing rain may dominate through much of Monday.

The National Weather Service warned that icy road conditions could significantly impact the Monday morning and evening commutes, especially on secondary and untreated roads. Rapid temperature drops into the upper teens and low 20s overnight may allow ice to form efficiently, even on bare pavement.

Officials also noted that gusty winds behind the system, combined with ice accumulation, could result in isolated power outages.

Residents are urged to plan ahead, limit travel if possible, and monitor the latest forecasts and road conditions at newengland511.org and weather.gov/gyx/winter.

For commuters, students, and workers across Maine, even light ice accumulation may lead to significant travel disruptions on Monday.
